Welcome to Linnaeus University! Here you'll meet 2 200 staff members and 40 000 students, all united in following the vision to set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development. With us, research and education are conducted with an eye towards the future. Our proximity to the business world, both locally and globally, gives us a wide reach and the ability to create change that makes an impact. All that's needed is a place where ideas have the space to meet and grow. That's what we've created – and you are invited. Change starts here! This position is based at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science. The research profile at this department is multidisciplinary and includes e.g. aquatic ecology, cell- and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, zoonotic ecology and epidemiology, environmental science, climate research, environmental chemistry, environmental risk assessment and paleoecology. Field of subject for the position: Environmental science Placement: Kalmar. Since the Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the locations may occur. Extent and period: Full-time, 11 months. Activities should start early 2025. Context of position The working tasks consist mainly of research within geoscience. In your job you are expected to actively participate in the department's environment and network both internally and externally. The aim of this project is to investigate biosignatures and low-temperature processes in subsurface environments (the deep biosphere of fractured continental rock) with emphasis on ancient and modern microbial activity). The researcher will be mostly dedicated, but not exclusively, to ongoing projects at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science at Linnaeus University, mainly about microbial sulfate reduction in the deep terrestrial subsurface over geological time scales, and related studies. The work will involve practical activities, fieldwork (drill core sampling), laboratory work (sample preparation, analyses and experiments) and modelling. Qualification requirements Qualified for appointment is the one who holds a Master degree in geoscience, or has a foreign degree deemed equivalent to this. To be eligible for this position is also required -A high proficiency in written and spoken English, be able to solve difficult problems, and have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group. -Documented experience of analytical and conceptual modelling work in geoscience. This includes sampling and analysis of sulfide minerals, carbonate minerals, sulfate minerals, and/or mineralized biofilms, and interpretation of biosignatures in these materials. Assessment criteria Qualifying otherwise is -experience of analytical protocols and sample preparation for studies of stable isotope compositions in minerals, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and related interpretation. -Previous documented deep biosphere research experience, particularly of ancient (but also of modern) systems, is particularly valuable, but not crucial. - The work takes place in a research group, which is why cooperation and flexibility are given great importance.
